Transnet Pipelines celebrates 60 years of service

Transnet Pipelines (TPL) celebrated its sixtieth year of service to South Africa’s fuel and energy sector on February 5 and hosted a high-level business and stakeholder engagement session to commemorate the milestone.
The State-owned utility points out that it has been six decades since the commissioning of South Africa’s first long-distance fuel pipeline in 1965, which reflects TPL’s enduring role in enabling energy security, industrial development and economic growth.
In opening a celebration event attended by various stakeholders, TPL CE Sibongiseni Khathi highlighted the milestone as an opportunity to honour the organisation’s legacy and its commitment to the communities that host and safeguard its infrastructure, and engage business and stakeholders on the future of pipeline infrastructure in a changing energy landscape.
During a keynote address, Transnet chairperson Andile Sangqu emphasised the strategic importance of TPL as a national asset, underscoring the role of sound governance, long-term investment and resilience in safeguarding energy security and economic stability.
In turn, Transnet group CE Michelle Phillips said Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy was repositioning its businesses to deliver sustainable value. She reaffirmed Transnet’s commitment to supporting TPL through targeted investment, operational focus and strategic alignment to ensure the long-term resilience and relevance of pipeline infrastructure.
Government leaders, including the Premier of Gauteng and a representative from the office of the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, reflected on the critical role of pipeline infrastructure in supporting provincial and local economic development, industrialisation and aviation fuel security.
As TPL enters its next chapter, the organisation remains committed to modernising infrastructure, strengthening partnerships and fuelling South Africa’s future.
